A little history

Minster on Sea grew up around an abbey founded in the 660s by Queen Seaxburh of Kent, and the Abbey Church of St Mary and St Sexburga still stands on the hill. Sheerness, next door, grew around the naval dockyard and fort built in the 1600s; the Dutch captured the fort during their raid on the Medway in 1667. The dockyard closed in 1960 and the town is now a busy port.
